Message from the President

Human Resources Colleagues: 

In September of last year over 50 HR leaders gathered from our Adventist hospitals to Phoenix for a fantastic National Association of Adventist Healthcare Human Resources (NAAHHR) conference.  The attendees had the opportunity to hear from Shebani Patel at PriceWaterhouse Coopers on benchmarking data, a legal update with Sylvia Adams from AHS, the Full Plate Diet lunch/learn session and I will never forget Steve Gilliland’s talk on Making a Difference.   Every year I gain a blessing from the networking and fellowship we experience.  Pink is not my favorite color, but last year we rode Pink Jeeps and I was moved by the amazing views of Sedona. 

It is a privilege to work with your NAAHHR officers to host the 2012 NAAHHR Conference in Denver, CO.  This event will take place on September 21, 2012, so mark your calendars!  The Registration Form will be sent out shortly in a separate email. 

Scholarship Opportunities:   NAAHHR will once again offer scholarship funds towards bringing an emerging leader colleague from within your HR department to the conference.  This will be a great learning opportunity for succession planning into a leadership role respecting limited travel budgets.  The scholarships will be available for $1,000 each and we will send out more information in the near future on this unique opportunity.

2012 NAAHHR Officers 

Secretary/Treasurer:  Laura Asaftei
Laura is the Administrative Director of Human Resources for Florida Hospital Zephryhills.  Laura has been with AHS since 2008 and graduated from the HR Residency program at the corporate office.  When she’s not at work, Laura loves traveling, kayaking and running.  She just ran a 1/2 marathon! 

President Elect:  Alyson Parker
Alyson Parker Gordon serves as the HR Director for Florida Hospital Celebration Health in Central Florida.  Her primary focus includes Employee Engagement and Organizational Culture.  Alyson has worked for AHS in various capacities since 2005 and has her CCP, MBA and SPHR.  Alyson has a passion for shoes, shopping and a two-year old Yorkie named Betsey.  This is her second year serving on the NAAHHR Board. 

 President:  Rick Dodds
I serve as Vice President/Compliance Officer at Sonora Regional Medical Center in Adventist Health.  I have served in various roles at two other Adventist Health locations on the West Coast since 2002.  I have a passion for promoting our mission and developing a culture that clearly connects to purpose.  My wife and I are busy at home with a three year old daughter named Adeline and an eight month old named Ryan.  In the summer you’ll find my family boating on the lake…in the winter you’ll find us skiing on the slopes. 

We each have a unique opportunity to serve and fulfill our organization’s mission within our respective communities.  I hope you will join us at the conference in Denver to gain valuable insight and renewel on how we each exhibit the mission of Adventist health care.  More information and registration form to come.

2011 Conference Scholarship Information

Dear NAAHHR Members:

I’m sure that many of you have identified talent in your organization that you see great potential in. Why not give these individuals the opportunity to attend this year’s NAAHHR Conference at no cost to your organization?

The NAAHHR Board is excited to announce that a 2011 NAAHHR Conference Scholarship will be available for two “Up and Coming” HR Professionals. The scholarship is intended for:

  • A Human Resources applicant in a non-managerial position or that is new to the profession
  • Travel costs associated with attending the conference

NAAHHR was created to bring together the HR leaders of Adventist healthcare organizations, and we can’t think of a better way to help you enrich the careers of your future leaders than to send them to Phoenix! Please take a moment to nominate someone by filling out the 2011 NAAHHR Application for Conference Scholarship Form and submitting it to Susie Jamerson at Susan.Jamerson@ahss.org by May 1, 2011.

2011 Conference Registration is Open!

Dear HR Professionals:

In September we will gather in Phoenix, AZ for our annual NAAHHR conference.  As in years past, the NAAHHR conference will precede the ASHHRA conference.  Your NAAHHR officers are working diligently to line up great speakers based on the feedback received about last year’s conference.

Here are the pertinent details about our upcoming conference:

September 9-10, 2011

Registration

To register, please download the following form: 2011 NAAHHR Registration Form. Once you’ve completed all of the required information, please e-mail your registration form to Alyson.Parker@fhms.org. Checks are to be made out to Florida Hospital Flagler Foundation.

Be sure to address your envelope to the attention of Human Resources so that it can appropriately be applied to your registration.

Hotel

Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel

We have secured a discounted rate of $209 per night for 1-2 guests.  The rate is slightly higher for 3-4 guests. Reservations can be made by calling 1-800-325-3535 or by clicking on this link http://www.starwoodmeeting.com/Book/NAAHHRSEPT2011. The group rate will be available until August 9, 2011 and is subject to availability. 

If you plan on staying in Phoenix to attend ASHHRA, you will need to make a second reservation at the Sheraton or another hotel of your choice.  The ASHHRA conference will be held at the Phoenix Convention Center which is just one block north of Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel. Helpful hint:  If you are staying at the Sheraton for the entire stay, be sure to inform the front desk you have two separate reservations in order to avoid switching rooms. 

Social Activities

We will have several activities during our conference, including a Friday night dinner, a Sabbath daytime activity, and a Saturday night dinner.  We will share more details about the planned social activities as soon as we get all the details.

A Word From Our President

Human Resources Colleagues:

A few months ago over 50 HR leaders from the Adventist hospitals around our nation turned out for a successful National Association of Adventist Healthcare Human Resources (NAAHHR) conference in sunny Tampa, Florida.  Whether you were motivated by Bob Murphy’s insightful engagement model, laughed at Greta Sherman’s inspirational humor, or felt motivated after hearing Brian Brim share on tips for employee engagement, I know there was a learning opportunity for each of us.  Not only does our association provide these learning opportunities, but it also provides meaningful networking from across our five Adventist systems.

This year I am excited and privileged to lead out our NAAHHR association and host the 2011 conference in Phoenix, Arizona.  This event will take place on September 9, 2011, so mark your calendars!

With only seven months away, I’d like to kick off the New Year with some introductions to your NAAHHR association leaders, as well as provide you with important information.

YOUR NAAHHR OFFICERS:

 President

I serve as a Human Resources Specialist for Adventist Health System’s Corporate office, and have had the pleasure of working there for the past 7 ½ years.  I’m based in Orlando, FL where it is 77 degrees as I type this email.J  This is my third and final year as an officer for the association, and it has been a true honor being a part of such a great group. 

President Elect

Rick Dodds is the Vice President of Human Resources for Sonora Regional Medical Center in California.  Rick serves as our association’s Vice President, and has served with the association for the past two years.  I have grown to appreciate his great energy, commitment to teamwork, and have no doubt he will lead this association with excellence next year when I move on.

Secretary/Treasurer

Alyson Parker is the Director of Human Resources for Florida Hospital Flagler.  This is Alyson’s first year serving as Secretary/Treasurer.  I have already come to appreciate her great follow through, and excitement as she starts her three year rotation as a NAAHHR officer.  She is also a newlywed so wish her well in this new adventure!

 SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Last year we received some great feedback regarding the use of NAAHHR funds towards bringing other non-leadership colleagues from within our HR departments to the conference.  This would be a great learning opportunity for someone you’re succession planning for a future leadership role, and is cost effective for those with limited travel budgets.  We are excited to announce that we are making two scholarships available in the amount of $1,000 each.  Only two candidates will be selected by the NAAHHR officers. 

In the near future, Alyson will be sending you an email with an application for this scholarship, a registration form for the conference, and details on hotel reservations.
